They set out before dawn the next morning. She didn’t want to risk waiting for daybreak and running into anyone else on the road. Admittedly, by the time the horses and people were ready, Roxy saw they looked like a formidable group. Anyone approaching them would be wise to not start trouble. It wasn’t the local people she was worried about. No, they were all prepared for emergencies. It was the ones filtering in from big cities, ones who were already starting to panic at the realization they were not prepared for what was coming.

As time wore on, fear would turn to desperation, driving even the calmest of men to the edge of survival. As the miles wore on slowly, she heard one of the other riders approaching from behind. Altogether, they had five of the horses with them. Three were being ridden by Hilda, Liam, and herself, while the other two pulled the lightweight wagons with their riders. On the trip back, both Liam and Hilda would ride with the wagons, their horses acting as seconds for pulling the weight of the loaded-down wagons when the time came. She knew they were all on edge, but Liam was doing a great job of keeping moods light.

“So, Liam, Raven has told me a little about you, but how did you and Raven meet up?” Roxy asked.

“Well, I was in a situation where I traveled a lot for work. It’s always been hard to stick with one job.”

“Have you always done one thing, or are you a master of all crafts?”

Liam chuckled. “I’ve done just about every job under the sun. I didn’t mind it, but I liked having alternatives.”

“Is that how you met Raven?”

“I bumped into her and the caravan about six months ago. It was a rough patch of my life, and having the chance to join them pretty much saved my life.”

“If you don’t mind me asking, what were you going through back then?”

“My wife died from cancer. It’s another reason I worked so much. I was drowning in medical debt even before she passed. When she died, I just didn’t know what else to do with my life. So, I buried myself in jobs and tried to pass the time.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. No one should have to bear the burden of losing a loved one,” Roxy said.

“Death comes for everyone, though.” Liam sighed. “Anyway, after talking with Raven and the group a few times, it was clear that I needed a change. I sold the house and almost everything I owned. We hit the road a week later.”

“And the caravan became your family?”

“It sure did. They’ve been everything I’ve needed in this world,” Liam said. “What about you and Alex? Looked like there could be something there.”

“We’ve always had something between us. The timing has always been off, though. Now, I’m afraid it’s too late.”

Liam chuckled. “I loved my wife, and even at the end, there was still plenty of love between us. Just remember it’s never too late for love, Roxy.
